The average chart position of Kim Wilde singles in this old chart from 1985 is... 19

Nothing very topical about this chart, but I've already done the weeks
either side of it and we haven't had 1985 for a while. Then I was
listening to Now 5 recently and a few of the tracks are on here. Mind
you, there's also a track that doesn't show up until Now 10.

Also features both Imagination the band and 'Imagination' the song.

Playlists are here, although I only have the Top 21 on YouTube so far.

Chart dated: 25th May 1985
1.  (1) Paul Hardcastle    - 19
Still a god song even if it does sound very dated these days.
Post by Chris Brown
2.  (7) Duran Duran - A View To A Kill
Thier last hit from their imperial phase before they sort of split up
before getting back together a year later.
Post by Chris Brown
3.  (8) Jimmy Nail - Love Don't Live Here Anymore
I think people were quite surprised that he could sing although I
believe he was a musician before become an actor.
Post by Chris Brown
4.  (2) Phyllis Nelson - Move Closer
A popular song in nightclubs at the end of the night.
Post by Chris Brown
5.  (3) Bronski Beat and Marc Almond - I Feel Love (Medley)
I think Radio 1 still cut 'Love To Love You Baby' despite it being 9
years since the Donna Summer original was in the charts.
Post by Chris Brown
6.  (4) DeBarge    - Rhythm Of The Night
A decent enough pop dance song.
Post by Chris Brown
7. (15) Marillion - Kayleigh
Until this record I thought they were awful. This one is a decent song
though. As I once posted there's no park in Belsize Park so goodness
knows where Fish and his lady were getting up to no good.
Post by Chris Brown
8.  (5) Steve Arrington - Feel So Real
Another decent pop dance song.
Post by Chris Brown
9.  (6) The Style Council - Walls Come Tumbling Down!
A few days after this chart the Hysel Stadium disaster happened which
pretty much ruined any chance of it getting extra radio play. Good song
though.
Post by Chris Brown
10.(35) Manchester United Football Team - We All Follow Man United
Well I don't! FA Cup finalists, I think they won beating the team at
number 14.
Post by Chris Brown
11.(14) Bryan Ferry - Slave To Love
He really was releasing records that were too smooth for ther own good
by this point.
Post by Chris Brown
12.(11) Freddie Mercury - I Was Born To Love You
This is the record Freddie had been wanting to record for years so the
other members of Queen let him get on with it, perhaps to stop the band
splitting.
Post by Chris Brown
13.(10) Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me)
The above was produced in Giorgio Moroder's studios in Munich. This song
was co-wriiten by Giorgio Moroder's (and Donna Summer's) drummer which
links it back to the song at number 5.
Post by Chris Brown
14.(32) Everton 1985 - Here We Go
They never got going apparently. I never saw the FA Cup final in 1985 as
I had a Saturday job working in Ladbrokes. It was the first FA Cup Final
I'd not seen since 1969.
Post by Chris Brown
15. (9) Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World
Great song though somewhat overplayed these days.
Post by Chris Brown
16.(20) Loose Ends - Magic Touch
A bit dull.
Post by Chris Brown
17.(24) Go West - Call Me
As was this. I never understood the appeal of Go west. Their music was
just very dull and generic.
Post by Chris Brown
18.(31) Gary Moore and Phil Lynott - Out In The Fields
I bought this single. A great rock song.
Post by Chris Brown
19.(22) Kim Wilde - Rage To Love
I bought this one too. Very rockabilly.
Post by Chris Brown
20.(39) Katrina And The Waves - Walking On Sunshine
And I bought this one too. I can't listen to it now.
Post by Chris Brown
21.(25) Depeche Mode - Shake The Disease
And get this - I bought thsi too. They were certainly changing their
image from their early 1980s electro-pop days.
Post by Chris Brown
26.(12) U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
One of my favourite U2 songs. Another I owned.
Post by Chris Brown
28.(38) Animotion - Obsession
And another I owned. I liked it at the time but now it just sounds too
mid-80s to enjoy, if that makes sense.
Post by Chris Brown
33.(17) USA For Africa - We Are The World
The biggest selling single of the 80s in the US but it didn't sell as
well as expected here. 8m in the US but less than 500k here.
Post by Chris Brown
43.(67) Philip Bailey - Walking On The Chinese Wall
Great song.
Post by Chris Brown
49.(48) Propaganda - Duel
I bought this on double pack 7". One of my favourite songs of 1985.
Post by Chris Brown
68.(NE) The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
I bought this one too when I bought a new hi-fi separates a couple of
months later. A brilliant song, especially when played loud.
Post by Chris Brown
79.(NE) Sister Sledge - Frankie
One of the worst number 1's of the 80s.
Post by Chris Brown
84.(76) Latin Quarter - Radio Africa
Good song. Their manager later managed Oasis and currently manages Noel
Gallagher.

3.  (8) Jimmy Nail - Love Don't Live Here Anymore
I think people were quite surprised that he could sing although I
believe he was a musician before become an actor.
He was, although not with any commercial success. Prior to getting his
break as an actor he was a factory worker, and played in a band with his
friends in his spare time. Once he'd established himself as an actor he
was then able to invest some of that money in having another crack at
music, this time with much greater success.

I meant to point out but I forgot when doing my earlier post that
there's a connection between the two acts here. Bryan Ferry and then
Everton manager Howard Kendall were in the same class at school. And as
I might have mentioned before in relation to Bryan Ferry that school is
quite literally at the end of my street. I think it's the school's only
claim to fame.

Chart dated: 25th May 1985
It's an interesting chart, because - possibly unsurprisingly, given the
date - it's on the transition from the early 80s synth/punk/disco era to
the late 80s big hair era. I was already beginning to go off chart music
a bit by then, although I still remember most of these very well.

There's one act in here that I've definitely seen live, twice. They
didn't play their song that's in this chart either time. And I've seen
another act in this chart play live as a member of a different act.

1. (1) Paul Hardcastle - 19
Very catchy.
Post by Chris Brown
2. (7) Duran Duran - A View To A Kill
The song is better than the movie. And that's not saying much. The video
is a museum of 1980s technology.
Post by Chris Brown
3. (8) Jimmy Nail - Love Don't Live Here Anymore
As cover versions go, this goes nowhere interesting.
Post by Chris Brown
4. (2) Phyllis Nelson - Move Closer
OK ballad. No, actually, it's a pretty good ballad. I didn't really like
it that much at the time, but that's mainly because it didn't fit my
preferred genres. With the benefit of hindsight it comes across better.
Post by Chris Brown
5. (3) Bronski Beat and Marc Almond - I Feel Love (Medley)
This sounds exactly like you'd expect a collaboration between two acts
that are on their way out, put together purely in order to rake in some
royalties, to sound like.
Post by Chris Brown
6. (4) DeBarge - Rhythm Of The Night
Good song. But very much of its time.
Post by Chris Brown
7. (15) Marillion - Kayleigh
Oddly enough, one of my favourites from this chart. Apparently, this
song was responsible for the name 'Kayleigh' (and variant spellings)
becoming established as a common girl's name in the UK.

8. (5) Steve Arrington - Feel So Real
Bland.

9. (6) The Style Council - Walls Come Tumbling Down!
Not one of their best.

10.(35) Manchester United Football Team - We All Follow Man United
As you might expect, they were in the FA Cup final that year. That's
pretty much the only reason why, once a year, a football club song
reaches the charts. Or, at least, did, back then. It's gone a bit out of
fashion now.
Post by Chris Brown
13.(10) Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me)

There is, actually, a bit of a back story to this which, if you are an
Everton supporter, is one of life's great injustices. Everton were
strong favourites for the FA Cup, having already won the league and the
European Cup Winners' Cup. A win at Wembley would give them an
unprecedented treble. But, as it turned out, they were denied on the day
as Man Utd won 1-0 with a goal in extra time. Worse, though, was to
eome, in a game they didn't even play in. The European Cup final that
year was contested between Liverpool and Juventus at the Heysel Stadium
in Brussels. Rioting between the two sets of fans led to the exclusion
of all English sides from the European Cup for five years. Everton lost
out on their chance to compete in the European Cup in 1985-86, and,
after English clubs were readmitted, they have never since won the title
or qualified under the new Champions League format. To rub salt into the
wound, Manchester Utd, Everton's conquerors at Wembley in 1985, became
the first English club to win a treble when they managed a clean sweep
of league, cup and Champions' League in 1999.
Post by Chris Brown
15. (9) Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World
All time classic.
Post by Chris Brown
20.(39) Katrina And The Waves - Walking On Sunshine
A band that are famous for three things. In reverse order: Winning the
Eurovision Song Contest in 1996, this song in 1985 (which is a classic
of its era), and coming from the same part of the country as me.

It is vaguely possible that I saw them live in their early days, as they
were, then, just a covers band who did the pub, club and event circuit
around where I lived. I know I saw bands at the time that I don't
remember any details of that fit that category. But it's not hugely
likely.
Post by Chris Brown
26.(12) U2 - The Unforgettable Fire

33.(17) USA For Africa - We Are The World
Not the best charity single of the era.

40.(NE) Gary Numan - The Live EP [Are Friends Electric?; Berserker; Cars; We Are Glass]
An interesting take on a couple of classic songs. And a couple of not so
classic songs.
Post by Chris Brown
64.(41) Dire Straits - So Far Away
In chart terms, this is definitely in "fourth single from the album"
territory, and peaked as high as you might expect. But, actually, it's
one of my favourites from the album. It is more of an album track than a
single, though.
Post by Chris Brown
68.(NE) The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
Classic of the era.
Post by Chris Brown
69.(56) Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Welcome To The Pleasuredome
Another one that's firmly in "fourth single from the album" territory.
It's an OK song, but not up to the level of the three that preceded it.
