94.    (NE)    Kelis    Caught Out There
How strange - almost all the songs I know are from the bottom half of
this chart! :P
Possibly because most of them would have been released in the run up to
Christmas 1999, whereas the songs higher up will be newer?
Obviously Kelis is an exception to that, I presume she was charting on
import sales at this point.

Here's the list I made of songs which are covers or have been
prominently covered. Interestingly two of them are people covering songs
they sang as members of bands.

3. (NE) Fierce Sweet Love 2K

15. (10) Nu Generation In Your Arms (Rescue Me)

28. (23) Westlife I Have A Dream/Seasons In The Sun

30. (32) William Orbit Barber's Adagio For Strings

32. (NE) Byron Stingily That's The Way Love Is

38. (32) Steps /Better The Devil You Know

40. (24) Lovestation Teardrops {2000 remixes}

51. (64) Martine McCutcheon Talking In Your Sleep/Love Me

53. (55) Robbie Williams She's The One/

56. (57) Cliff Richard The Millennium Prayer

62. (52) John Lennon Imagine {1999 reissue}

69. (72) Various Artists It's Only Rock 'N' Roll

71. (43) Justin Let It Be Me

77. (66) Cuban Boys Cognoscenti Vs Intelligentsia

88. (56) Martha Wash It's Raining Men

95. (NE) Van Morrison/Lonnie Donegan/Chris Barber I Wanna Go Home

77 is better known as The Hampsterdance Song {sic}
95 is better known as Sloop John B.

A few songs with easily recognisable sampled elements too:
1. (1) Gabrielle Rise

16. (7) Scanty Sandwich Because Of You

26. (16) The Notorious BIG Notorious BIG ft Puff Daddy

52. (39) Progress Presents The Boy Wunda Everybody

plus Mario Piu sampling a phone.

Home now, so here are the playlists from YouTube (108 tracks)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdiUvgvgpgNrfOTHdfldD_Rle6E0u5Ncs

Spotify (96 tracks)
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5GQDsmp5oRXNSigpEjvFU2

Might as well point out that Kelis has been topical recently as a
participant on The Masked Singer. And Mint Royale has/have just released
a comeback single.

1. (1) Gabrielle Rise
I think the original of this is out there somewhere, uses the backing from
'Fast Car'.
Post by Chris Brown
13. (8) Daphne And Celeste Ooh Stick You!
More catching than flu, although slightly less unpleasant.
Post by Chris Brown
25. (15) Mint Royale Don't Falter ft Lauren Laverne
Superb video. Not a bad song all round really. Although Lauren is quite
limited vocally; probably a better radio host than singer.

Didn't recall this until the sports editor of the local radio station was on
their version of Desert Island Discs (ironically... although it's called
Tuesday Guest for licensing reasons, they get 6 records and no book/luxury)

This was one of his picks - it reminded him of his feelings for his wife,
who is significantly older and had a child from her first marriage.
Post by Chris Brown
56. (57) Cliff Richard The Millennium Prayer
Also works if you sing it to the Match of the Day theme tune, pretty much
Post by Chris Brown
88. (56) Martha Wash It's Raining Men
Was this tied into the Bridget Jones film?
Post by Chris Brown
94. (NE) Kelis Caught Out There
One of my 'bad day at work' playlist. Although very little beats Smashing
Pumpkins, 'Bullet with Butterfly Wings' very loud. Although Suede, 'Animal
Nitrate' comes close.

That was 'Dreams' - this one samples 'Knockin On Heaven's Door'. I
believe it was the first time Bob Dylan allowed his actual recording to
be sampled.

I thought she was better as a singer, but to give her credit she has
grown into the role.
Anyway, this is a great record.

I don't think that relates directly to the content of the song but I
suppose the sentiment fits.

Oops yes.

I think they used this in a drama I remember watching pissed one Xmas -
featuring Billie Piper James Nesbitt and Dennis Waterman.

One of the blokes ends up sticking a red hot pipe somewhere painful to the
other one...

Think it was based around a Chaucer.

I didn't do English A-Level, but that sounds like the way people have

Decent enough but he (they?) have done better.

prefer Anita's original.

4.     (2)    Britney Spears    Born To Make You Happy
I quite liked this one.

7.     (4)    Andreas Johnson    Glorious
This track is indeed glorious. Possibly my favourite song in this chart.
Post by Chris Brown
8.     (5)    Donell Jones    U Know What's Up
This could almost be a track from the early 80s. Maybe it samples
something from back then?

Largely forgotten track. Quite liked it if it's the one I'm thinking of.

The only one I recall by him is 'Thong Song' from later in 2000.

There's still a part of me which refuses to believe that any four digit year
starting with a 2 can possibly be a long time ago. But still. Twenty years
is a long time ago.

I remember surprisingly little of this, given that Zoe Ball was still the
Radio 1 breakfast DJ at the time so I was listening to it on the way to work
most days. Maybe that's just because there isn't a lot of memorable music
here. Late winter does tend to be a bit of a slow time for decent music, in
any era.

I've seen one artist in this chart play live. But more of that further down.

Bland. If songs were colours, this would be beige.

5. (3) R.E.M. The Great Beyond
One of the few that I properly remember from the time, and really liked then
and now.

6. (NE) The Tamperer Hammer To The Heart ft Maya
Unmemorable.

7. (4) Andreas Johnson Glorious
Another that was one of my favourites at the time.

8. (5) Donell Jones U Know What's Up
Followed by one that completely passed me by.

9. (NE) Death In Vegas Aisha
Slightly odd.

10. (9) DJ Luck And MC Neat A Little Bit Of Luck
I found this song incredibly irritating at the time. I have no reason to
revise that opinion.

17. (11) Artful Dodger Re-Rewind The Crowd Say Bo Selecta ft Craig David
This is, possibly, even more irritating. But in a different way.

20. (14) Len Steal My Sunshine
One of the few genuinely good songs in this chart.

22. (21) Sting Desert Rose ft Cheb Mami
As is this. But, in my mind, I don't associate this song with February.
Later that year, it was used in an advert for Jaguar, which ran repeatedly
during the TV coverage of Euro 2000. So my memories of the song are based on
that, so for me it always feels like a summer song.

Apparently, the idea of using the song as an advert for Jaguar came from
Sting's people, who thought that Jaguar might be interested in a video which
already featured one of their cars. Jaguar agreed, and built the commercials
around the video. Unusually, no money changed hands for the rights to use
the song - instead, the car commercials were designed to also be an advert
for the song and album as well as the car. It worked, at least for Sting.
The album ended up selling over 4 million copies, which was about four times
as many as the record label had expected when they released it. I have no
idea how many cars it sold.

28. (23) Westlife I Have A Dream/Seasons In The Sun
How to ruin two songs in one go.

30. (32) William Orbit Barber's Adagio For Strings
Another one of the few great tracks in this chart. I bought the album off
the back of it, and was severely disappointed. But, still. This is classic
fin de millennium dance.

42. (38) Macy Gray I Try
Good song.

53. (55) Robbie Williams She's The One/It's Only Us
Did the A2 side ever get played? The A1 is a pretty good song.

56. (57) Cliff Richard The Millennium Prayer
On the one hand (the musical hand), this is pretty dire. But, on the other
hand (the subversive hand), you do have to hand it to Cliff for successfully
gatecrashing the millennium number one slot with a combination of a tune
that's centuries old and lyrics that are nearly two millennia old.

As you may have guessed, Cliff is the one artist in this chart that I've
seen play live. But, oddly enough, I've also seen the composer of this song,
Paul Field, play live. Or, more accurately, the arranger and
(part)-lyricist, since the tune is an old one and most of the words are,
too. I was dispatched to review him at a festival appearance a few years
after this. I have to say that I was not impressed. As a songwriter he may
be up there with the stars (he's written for Elkie Brooks and Tammy Wynette,
among others, as well as Cliff), but as a performer he was decidedly
mediocre. Then again, though, that's not uncommon. I doubt if Guy Chambers
or Bernie Taupin are that good on stage either.

62. (52) John Lennon Imagine {1999 reissue}
Dunno why this was released here. It's not really a great song, anyway. I
know that may be a controversial statement, but, there you go.

70. (67) Melanie C Northern Star
While she may have been the one who could sing, this wasn't a particularly
good song.

72. (68) Eiffel 65 Blue (Da Ba Dee)
Quirky.

Internet memes. The original page is preserved at the Internet Archive, but,
unfortunately, that doesn't include the audio track.
